Four years isn’t exactly brief, and it really started in 2001-2. More importantly, it would be a formative era for a *lot* of current game developers, so these Japanese game devs would have come up with watching US media just shitting all over them.
FF12, LoZ:TP, and God Hand, at least, got critically shit on pretty heavily.

SO:TL is really a good example of a game that only works when played a very specific way. It asks the question, but then intrinsically answers it by not letting you progress until you commit that war crime.
