It’s possible that you haven’t paid much attention to “personality” type entertainers in other mediums over the past 40 years*. I’m starting to suspect that there’s a wide overlap between people who gravitate towards that sort of popularity role and those who would exploit it.

They fill the same niche as talk show or late-night TV hosts did when I was growing up. People watch them because they know how to put on an engaging show. Anyone can play video games; some people can make it interesting to watch.
