Well, what else were they supposed to do with them? If the government nationalizes your plant, then you don’t have a plant for workers to work at anymore, so you can’t really employ workers who have nowhere to work.

I think any severance is exceeding generous of GM. I have to assume that they were under some sort of contractual obligation, otherwise why would they? Out of the goodness of their corporate heart?

Nationalizing industry is definitely socialism dude or dudette. The quibble would be between dictatorial socialism or democratic socialism. Neither place a high value on corporate property rights.

What should they have done, kept paying the workers and planning for these vehicles in their supply chain?

I’m confused. If the plant was seized by the government, why would anyone anticipate continued work for GM? GM doesn’t own the place you work anymore.

This is where all socialism eventually leads.

Maybe not the best way to notify them, but I’d say that the government seizing the plant is a pretty fair warning that you’re about to be out of a job.
