It's probably been recommended before, but I highly suggest FLCL. It's short; only 6 episodes, and is considered a top-notch anime.

The first time through it will seem like a pure-random comedy, but a second viewing will reveal an underlying theme. (Be prepared to be hit aside the head with metaphor after metaphor)

Sorry, but for $500 you can build a full 64-bit quad-core gaming machine. If this is what the "steam box" is going to be, color me disappointed.
