The corollary would be why Americans don't like hatchbacks — because during the Japanese invasion of the 70s/80s only the cheapest entry level econoboxes were offered in the hatchback body style so hatchback=cheap was ingrained into the car buyer's consciousness.

I would wager it's because of too many bad memories of malaise-era land yachts in the 1970s. Wagons were popular then. They got washed away by the mini van in the early 80s and I think the stigma of the land yacht days has remained.

Ah OK this could be their feeble attempt at explaining part-time 4wd (i.e. locked center diff which paradoxically requires everything to be slippy, i.e. full snow, sand, et al) and avoid binding on mixed terrain of clear pavement and slippy snot.

Yeah well I remember once it had started to snow and I had brand new chunky all terrain tires on my Jeep and decided I didn't need to engage 4WD for this one, my tires got it. Then I oversteered off the road into oncoming traffic and hit a marker post giving me my first dent.
