I for one welcome Disney’s move in recent years, of going to different cultures as sets for its traditional “Princess formula”. In this case, I hope they take the same effort and care they took with “Moana” where they actively resarched Polynesian myths and culture.

Black Panther was so great. I teach in Maine, white people central (including me), and I had a black student who literally talked to me about Black Panther daily for WEEKS. This kid just needs more opportunities to see himself represented on screen. And Luke Cage is great, but I can’t recommend that to my elementary

Black Panther was such a cool experience for this reason. I’m whiter than a fish belly but it was really cool to see black dads taking their sons (and daughters) to see a superhero movie that was so proudly and fiercely black. Love that shit.

Good, now there’s more room on the calendar for 32 more Robin Hood movies. This time he’s a Dracula!

Alright, you’ve had enough...

I think their animated Spider-Man featuring Miles Morales covers that empowering message for boys, but it would be nice to have a prince (or a pauper) as the main character for a change. Something like Aladdin for a new generation would be nice.

African Princess grows up to be African Queen.  That’s definitely better than growing up to be Humphrey Bogart.

It centers on a young African girl named Sadé who, when her kingdom is threatened by a mysterious evil force, accepts her newly discovered magical warrior powers

Damn, my pun from a while back really was accurate — Mowgli, mo’ problems.

Disney Princess’ are actually a brand name with official members and yes Pocohantas is a part of that group.  Interestingly both Elsa and Anna are not as there brand is so profitable they haven’t been roped into it.  However yes, Disney considered her a “Princess” as she is based on a Native “Princess” as white folks

Worth noting this is live action too - so skipping over the animated version to adapt later.

Herc never ascended to the Throne of Olympus and is therefore not a monarch.  Even if he married Meg at no point was she a Princess/Queen.  Which actually pisses me off as Elsa isn’t a Princess either - she’s a Queen.

Just goes to show — if you’re named Meg, you’re screwed no matter what time period you’re in.

Now playing

I’m still waiting for disney to remember this princess exists:

We can never have too many princesses of color, so this is fantastic news.

So what you’re saying is I have to watch Altered Carbon now.

Interesting choice. I’m in.

This is awesome. I had been clamoring for something that felt original (I realize it’s based on a novel). Something sci-fi that isn’t superheroes. Then came Altered Carbon. I’m glad it’s getting a second season, and, while I’m sad to see Kinnaman go (I loved the first two seasons of The Killing), I am really excited

I am so happy this show didn’t get canceled. It had its flaws for sure, but it was enjoyable and I loved watching the same actor play several different characters as they were re-sleeved. Watching the gang member play Ortega’s grandmother was such a fun bit.
