So, I just merged my account today (Thanks for making it obvious how to do that kinja guys /sarcasm) and now I’m getting a gazillion notifications on replies from a couple years ago. Is this a problem everybody is having or am I just unlucky?

Well, yes, if the search is illegal. Unfortunately courts have ruled that police can force people to unlock their phones with their fingerprint as noted by several other people who posted before me.

I’m excited about this, but weary of the times I’d want to unlock the phone without raising it to my face - i.e. when driving and needing to access a map, in an office meeting with phone on table, etc. TouchID worked perfectly in those scenarios.

Except that “pry[ing] your finger open and use[ing] that against your will” would be illegal and therefore any evidence would be suppressed. It’s not clear that would be the case when there is no physical act on the part of the police other than holding the phone near your face.

And the screen is a lot better, but still not sure if that’s all worth $300.

Sounds to me that the fatal flaw is when the police or girlfriend grabs the phone and holds it up to your face without your consent (like when you nap, or after you’ve been shot dead by the police). Open phone. Failed security. What prevents this?

Facial recognition has traditionally always had an extremely hard time working with very dark skinned people. I hope Apple really got it right with this or #AppleSoWhite or #WhiteFaceID is going to be the first “gate” of the new iphone if it only works reliably with lighter skin tones.
