Charlie Kaufman adapting Slaughterhouse-Five could be the most perfect pairing of author and filmmaker sensibilities since Richard Linklater's adaptation of A Scanner Darkly.

Oh dear lord, that's so perfect it hurts.

I'm not sure if there's any way to do the Giant ape loves tiny white woman" angle without being racist, but I think you could do a non-racist update of King Kong by dropping that angle entirely. Focus on the fact that he's a wild animal that is taken from his home and abused for human entertainment, and ultimately

Is Depp's alleged Native American heritage supposed to make this more or less disgraceful?

A play about characters whose only purpose for existing is so they could be killed. I love Tom Stoppard so much.

Yep. The closest thing to a happy ending possible in The Road is for the kid to hold onto his humanity for as long as possible before getting offed.

Gotta admire your guts in calling out Akira as overrated. I recently had people jump down my throat because I jokingly referred to Chronicle as a live action remake of Akira. A lot of people are very, ahem, passionate about that movie.

Glad to hear the writing is good, but it's still a terrible idea to have an animation style that's turns people off before they even have a chance to judge it on its other merits.

:shudders:

Funny, the Mach 5 Batmobile was the only design element in this that I actually liked.

Ugh... Why do these CGI DC animated shows look so ugly? The bits of Green Lantern I saw were just painful to look at, and this looks even worse. I know that a tv show isn't going to look as good as a movie, but there are other CGI cartoons out there that manage to not look like complete ass.

Sounds like you have a more positive view of humanity than I do.

Filler episodes aren't necessarily a bad thing. When done correctly, they can flesh out characters and the world they inhabit. If people are complaining about filler episodes, it probably means the show isn't very well-written anyway.

Nah, future io9ers will remember 2013 as an astonishingly "meh" year for big summer blockbusters.

It's not like it's the same people are complaining about all the things you mentioned here. The people who thought Superman was too much of a goody-goody seem to love this movie. Those of us who actually liked the Big Blue Boy Scout are the ones unhappy with the film.

Both?

I always like to tell people that despite not actually having Superman as a character, The Iron Giant is the best Superman movie ever made.

True. There has been an utter lack of joy in this year's crop of summer blockbusters. I'm hoping Pacific Rim can change that, since unlike Star Trek or Man of Steel, which were made by people who seem embarrassed by the source material, Guillermo del Toro has a genuine love of monster movies.

This is easily one of my favorite movies ever. Even though it's an original script, it feels like something out of a Ray Bradbury short story collection.

Depressingly true. We as a society get the movies we deserve.
