The most effective way to calm one’s anxiety is to breathe deeply, as in sighing, for about a minute. If the extra step is needed, try gradually lengthening the exhaled portion of the breath so that a full, deep inhalation is followed by a longer exhalation. (Naturally, if one has a respiratory condition, they will

I’m so sorry this happened with your mother. One does not choose the family into which we are born, but we sure as hell choose the family with which we identify as a member. You had the courage to walk away from a parent with racist beliefs and unwavering support for a madman in the White House, which shows integrity

So, he’s just another techie asshole as was Jobs... both have great ideas, but now I wonder where those ideas originated.

If a parent sends racist emails and won’t change their behavior by stopping, I recommend the recipient create a rule or filter that trashes these messages. If the parent persists, perhaps it is time for the child to go their own way and disconnect from such a racist person.

I also practice mindfulness all the time. Since the setting was walking, that’s the context I addressed.

Better yet, for one’s health - take the stairs, already. I’ve seen far too many people with gym bags on their shoulders, riding up escalators. Our bodies evolved for movement and motion and need to be exercised for optimal wellness.

The sun will be almost 76% obscured by the moon in this eclipse as viewed in San Francisco, so I will naturally participate in the observance of this spectacle. Thanks for sharing Vox’s tool.

I learned that if I wanted to maintain a baseline of good physical health, I needed to get adequate sleep and establish a routine to my daily life. I also learned that workplaces never provide adequate emotional support to health care professionals and to seek it out in my personal life. I learned to track my expenses

The comments often amplify or expand the content in the post, in a crowd-sourced manner. I often find the comments as informative/instructive or more than the article.

I grew up in the Deep South - the “Bible Belt unbuckled” - and have witnessed so much evil coming from these organizations and their followers. There is no reasoning with them, as they have “faith”, and there is no compromise on their part, as they see it as a loss of status in their religion and a loss of influence

Touche!

The problem - more acute now in the USA than ever - is the theocratic goal of many Christians, including Catholics. In a civil secular society, their rights to express themselves, worship as they wish, dissent, etc., are protected.

False dichotomy, Patrick, as there are times when a Kindle is handier and there are times when a paperback is better. Why have to choose, as one can use them both?
