Anyone who knows things can tell me why the elevated lines are, well, so elevated? It’s not the case in European cities, so why are they built to the level of what appears to be the fifth floor or something? Must’ve been a chore getting up to the platform?

The biggest problem with the New York City subway — yes, bigger than all the other problems — is its lack of accessibility. There are only like four stations in the entire system that have elevators. It’s virtually impossible to get around the city if you’re in a wheel chair (or if, like me, you’re trying to navigate

Don’t have the numbers but I wanted to point out that the train in your picture was used back in the 70s or 80s. We’ve had snow of that kind in recent years without disruption of service so they’ve likely improved how they handle snow along the El. And also that’s the Loyola stop!

Chicago has no problem with 80+% of its mass rail transit being outside in the sun, rain, and snow. It’s much easier to perform maintenance on it since it’s not buried under a few hundred tons of steel and concrete.

It’s important to note that we already invested in public transit a century ago. We just chose to dismantle much of it across our nation instead...

I mean it’s not like elevated rail is an unproven technology. The second busiest transit system in the country uses it just fine.

This is a great example of “just because something is old, don’t assume it’s bad.”

Well, transit needs better funding in general, but:

OMFG. Thank you for explaining the remaining trestle parts at the Myrtle stop. I’ve been wondering about that for years.

Major applause here, Aaron!

You think all these illegal immigrants are buying and driving cars? Every single immigrant accounts for one car?

I think that’s a huge reach and doesn’t really solve the greater issue.

Sources?

You’re full of shit.

Or just relax residential zoning to allow more houses in urban centers.

ban 👏 taxis 👏 and 👏 release 👏 more 👏 dockless 👏 electric 👏 scooters 👏 you 👏 cowards

This. If you want people to drive less, you have to build smarter cities. That also means investing in public transit. I know those are dirty words in the US, but there you are.

Hey, this isn’t Earther.

I hate [these auto manufacturers] more than anybody I know for clogging the streets and turning a blind eye to the behavior of their drivers [who directly kill 37,000 and injure 1.2 million people per year in crashes and contribute to global warming to boot].

“Side note: Yes, people are constantly messing with the brakes of these scooters. I regularly find cut cables, and on a few occasions, have started riding only to find out while in motion that the cables have been cut or removed entirely.”

I’m no fan of these scooter services nor many of the operators who are

If you ban cars you’ll always have metros and busses... so, it’s a win-win :D

Here in Bogota, Colombia, we do that every year.. in fact, it has happened 3 times this year alone, and i don’t see posts about it.... Sorry for not being PARIS
