...like the conservatory the use right now (DOT), to maintain Broadway? Pretty easy switch, funding-wise.
How does this contribute to gentrification? It just removes Broadway, which only rich people use, cuz normal/poor people don’t have cars (*cough* subway *cough).
How about we see some actual New Yorkers respond to this instead of the usual Jalops/libertarians vs the author?
<3
Almost?
OK, but by your logic, any climate scientist should also be shamed for polluting more than their fair share. That doesn’t make sense. Their role is to inform the public about the impeding disaster, they are the canary in the coal mine. They aren’t morally obligated to stop polluting any more than the average citizen.…
unskathed?
Most definitely. The majority of Jalops are pretty conservative, compared to the rest of Kinja. Gizmodo would be libertarian, in my estimation.
All of what you said is true (as far as I can tell).
Wow. Big writeup, bhtooefr, appreciate the effort! Almost seems like you’re writing this from my head. I agree with you on just about all of what you’re saying. Even managed to squeeze in some race/class issues there! Are you sure you’re a Jalop? :)
He’s helped inform the world about global warming. Won a Nobel Peace Prize. Not inconsequential, to say the least.
At least you realize the ideal! I guess the author is trying to gradually shift us back to a more dense society, something we already had before the so-called automotive “revolution”.
True, and space will be reserved for them. Right now though, all the power is on their side, as a car-dominated society. The author is trying to swing the power back towards the middle, so people can choose to not drive cars if they don’t want to.
Yeah, well she’s fastforwarding to the end of the story, where cars are effectively banned, save for enthusiasts.
Having horses is perfectly doable, from the article you linked: “Aside from stabling costs...the minimum annual cost of owning a healthy horse is $2,500.” So $8500 with stabling. Annual cost of owning a car? http://newsroom.aaa.com/2015/04/annual… So bout the same, right?
Yep, and our planet is “choosing” to reject our carbon emissions. Don’t you think there’s greater utility in being able to walk to places vs having to sit in traffic to do so? Worldwide surveys show that people that live in less car dependent cities are happier, healthier, and just live better lives.
Guess I have to keep repeating this: Casual googling has told me that a horse costs as much as a used car, which is what Jalops are buying anyways.
It’s all about the net though.
And a car based culture is obsolete compared to the (ironically prehistoric) notion of being able to walk to your place of work or areas of commerce. What convenience!
