Yeah, I kept wondering if he was going to mention the Darien Gap but I think he has it mixed up with the canal. The Bridge of the Americas spans the canal and probably more crossings I don’t know about.

For someone hoping not to deal with border guards and impassable canals but still wants a long driving adventure, the Trans America Trail looks like a lot of fun. Designed by a motorcyclist, but possible using a 4x4, it’s a dirt/gravel route from North Carolina all the way to the Oregon coast.

there’s that whole canal thing to deal with (you’ll need to ship your car across it)

No because they never take our advice and always buy boring stuff instead you’ll just be disappointed

BMW M12/13 was the most powerful BMW 4CYL 1,200HP at 5 bar of boost

It’s a hot hatchover

If I were allowed to agree, I would.

This makes me so happy. This is what I’d imagine it’d be like going to a Jalopnik event, being able to listen to you both be fun and amazing while any social anxiety prevents me from actually participating in the conversation. So I’d kind of hover, close enough to be within earshot but far enough away that none of you

Maybe I’m nuts, but after wrenching on Saabs for the better part of 40 years, I can say these GM underpinned 9-5s are pretty easy to work on and parts aren’t hard to get. Unlike earlier Saabs where engineering solutions were truly “inspired by jets” and thus weird as hell, these are pretty much Opel Vectras with

GM thinks they can replicate that success by making theirs lighter and more fuel-efficient as well...

There’s your answer. Can 3 grand buy you another smart car? Also, can you connect multiple smart cars together like a locomotive or some of the heavy hauler trucks?

I personally think he’s just trolling the shorters.  This can only end badly, ie the whole company going totally bankrupt.

Hot take: Tesla should never have gone public so early. The volatility of the stock price and the megalomaniacal control issues are just icing on the cake.

Crank windows and manual transmissions.

“ (I)ts CEO really needs to log off. (Really, everyone does.)“ Good point, but I would settler for just Elon Musk and our Tweeter-in-Chief logging off.

I don’t see it so much as “obsession” as a recognition of basic mathematics.

$40k on the used market opens up some seriously interesting vehicles. A quick search found a certified 2014 Diesel Cayenne with 30k miles in that range. How well it would hold value and how expensive it would cost to keep running is a bit questionable, but dude is already dealing with a BMW so he’s used to German

...Dammit.

I’ll take the easily-serviceable, unkillable AMC inline-six.

In 20 days, I plan to have my 1979 Jeep Cherokee Golden Eagle ready for the Toledo Jeep Fest—a gathering of Willys, Kaiser, AMC, DaimlerChrysler, Chrysler and Fiat Chrysler-era off-road machines in the hometown of Jeep itself. But things aren’t looking good
