I think the reposting of the article barely touches on the most important point which is that the cars are being abandoned without any damage to the vehicle. A lot of the comments below seem to miss that point.

The moron was probably thinking about a recovery rope, which uses elasticity to yank the other car free. Tow straps do not share that elasticity.
