M&Ps only recently gained the optional external safety (within the last few years), and they aren’t all that common.

I like safeties, they inspire more confidence the weapon, and after becoming so accustomed to having one, I put a thumb saftey on my Glock. It’s somewhat new, I think they started that around 2010, and it isn’t often seen. All of the M&P 9s we had when I carried were definitely without an external safety.
It takes a certain type of person, and most can’t handle it.
