I just remember it being such a halo car - models, posters, magazine articles, giant picture spreads - but jeez, the glasses are not so rose colored!

I was just watching Jay Leno’s Garage yesterday, and he was driving his 1993 Viper, talking about it having 400 HP. It seemed like so much at the time. My new Mustang GT has 435 HP.
Because it’s been tasked with doing so many things - providing air cover for the various operations that US forces are engaged in around the globe, humanitarian missions, anti-piracy, anti-drug operations, observation of aggressor states, ballistic missile defense operations, etc, etc, etc. The bulk of the surface…
That’s a big if, though. Railguns will be very cool, but they’re still science projects. We think they’ll work, and they’re being proven, but they require a LOT of power. You can’t run them on a Burke, and from what I know, it’ll be tough to run the SPY-3 radar AND a railgun on a DDG-1000. For now, it can’t do AAW…
But the thing is, they’re NOT miserable at weapons development. The AEGIS program is probably the most successful and relevant program in the history of warfare. It’s also the most capable. Hence, why I’m constantly advocating for the Navy to incorporate more features into their other surface combatants.
Exactly what I’m getting at. I’d want to see a lengthened Flight III Burke with more VLS cells. The main reason the Ticos are so formidable, is that they’re able to pack so much more firepower. The Burkes are better, overall, because they carry the better radar, with the SPY-1D and D(V). The Ticos have four…
Considering the rate at which the USN’s cruiser fleet is aging and NOT being replaced (no replacement has been funded), the destroyer fleet now making up the single largest surface combatant, and being stretched INCREDIBLY thin, thanks to global politics and world entanglements, we don’t necessarily need more of…
Do you understand what littoral means?
The defense budget is only so big. I know it seems huge, but contracts, especially large procurement items, are planned years in advance. It’s not exactly easy or cheap to change course. Even if Saudi Arabia were footing the development bill, the USN would still need to free up development funds from another program.…
LCS-1 is listed as having a top speed of 47 knots, but definitely has a sprint speed (surely classified) above that. I don’t know what it is. The additional mass will cut into it, certainly. Considering that the ship has 48,000 shaft horsepower, I think she’ll still move pretty well. The Freedom-class currently…
Agreed, Tyler. What would be extremely smart would be to lengthen the ship, add some tonnage, and outfit the SPY-1F (or SPY-1K), like they show in the top option (this was a very real possibility that was being floated to Israel for a bunch of years while I was working at LM). If they’re using a derivative of the…
That’s the point. They’re used often for decoration in officer’s offices, around dignitaries, etc. At SPAWAR, there are large shells (not sure of caliber) with brass casings and wooden ‘projectiles’.
Is it weird that I read the entire blurb about him in his gravelly, standoffish voice? I’ve hated every character I’ve ever seen him play, but he’s such a great actor!
Of all the awesome that this car gets, I’m really sad that it’s only getting Sync 2. I just picked up my 2016 Mustang GT with Sync 3, and it’s heads and tails above any other Infotainment/Nav system I’ve used - Uconnect, CUE, Comand, MFT/Sync 2, Sync, MyLink/Intellilink, InControl - they all pale compared to the ease…
Not really. The 5” gun on the DDG-51 and CG-47 classes isn’t really optimized for shore bombardment. Those ships are designed for fleet AAW and ASW via missiles. That’s why the DDG-1000 class was designed - generals at the top of the USMC had bitched up and down that the Navy could not support the shore bombardment…
This was a great read. While I’ve never made it up for one of these, I grew up in Central New Jersey, going to both paved and dirt short tracks - Wall Stadium was my home every Saturday night, but we’d hit Flemington for the Race of Champions every year, New Egypt and Bridgeport for dirt racing. I saw Brett Hearn, Gil…
Greatest.
I just took delivery of a Race Red 2016 Mustang GT Performance Pack today. It is red, only because that gorgeous blue that Ford showed the GT, GT350R, and Focus RS in isn’t offered on production vehicles.
THINK OF THE BASEBALLS!
Especially considering the fact that all federal information systems require security evaluations and IA accreditations, part of which is eliminating EOL software. Getting a waiver for Windows XP is a serious pain in the ass.
