@SuperGerbil: they do the same with wifi, if you jailbreak, you can choose to see the -db levels of both wifi and cellpone reception. The iPhone 4 just pushes both to the extremes, as in, either the signal is great, or it simply isn't at all.
Could a wacom touch tablet work in a similar fashion?
