From my understanding, they broke into two parts so sales from part 1 could continue funding development. For anyone who backed it, thinking their passionate support single-handedly made that game happen, and see it turn into a run for more funding...it does kinda stink.
The publisher is almost always the cause of the external issues.

The question should be “Did this content actually NEED to be changed or altered to accomplish what the goal in question was?” or “Would not changing this content have hindered the goal in question?” ; the “goal” here being conveying the intended feeling or experience of the original, presumably.
