It was also bizarrely frank about its characters’ mortality, gruesomely bumping off Max’s family in the first five minutes of the pilot, before doing the same to a lovable, one-off scamp in an episode about gun control.

Good point. Libertarianism is a Rorschach test of sorts—what does “no regulations” mean to you? There’s a decent contingent of racist libertarians who claim that the free market will sort out racism, since people won’t patronize openly racist establishments. I remember some smaller comic company running a parody, doing “Burial For a Buddy” while DC was running the “Funeral for a Friend” aftermath storyline.  The cover featured superhero pallbearers carrying a phone booth with an Out of Order sign on it.
