My understanding from comments I heard on Radio Le Mans is that the fan is for a differential fluid cooler.
There was one on display at the Grand Prix du Canada Festival in downtown Montreal a couple of weeks ago. It's a very handsome little car — it looked great in person. It's out of my price range, but I hope people buy them.

It's actually Mark Smith, and he's based in Wareham, MA. The truck conversion is still a work in progress, but the mid-engine MkIV conversion is doing quite well at this point.
I was on the side roads in the same area at the same time that this happened (I live about 2 miles away). The roads iced over fast and were treacherous to say the least. Combine that with oblivious drivers who were probably driving too fast and this is what you get. Fun stuff.
