I got a check book with my bank account when I lived in France and was using a French bank. I never used it. Germany doesn't really seem to use checks. I need to ask my parents when they disappeared.

At my bank it's possible to have just single bank transfers. I use it a lot. Only my rent is automatic, the rest of it I do by hand because it gives me a feeling of control.
