He was surfing waves created by a hurricane, not surfing during a hurricane. The conditions were not what would be considered life-threatening, although people have died surfing 2 foot surf and 30 foot surf. Here’s a photo of the last wave he caught:

He was literally world class talent. 2 weeks ago he won a contest where the best surfers under 21 competed from around the world. He was well within his skill level at the wave he was surfing, and a freak accident happened.

As a former “professional” surfer, go fuck yourself. When a hurricane or storm comes in, it is very, very common to surf the swell created by it before the storm arrives and immediately following its departure. That is literally how waves are created.
