That’s the official definition, but as someone who takes these photos day in and out....trust me, the post office refuses anything even close to what would be considered an actual smile. *both* of the smiling photos above would be quickly and firmly rejected.

“Natural smile” is really a weird descriptor—you can’t show your teeth in the smile. And they do want to see your ears. What they told you there is the easiest way to get the passport to pass.

I’m in the US, and I take passport photos as part of my job—and the post office has rejected photos where the customer insisted on smiling.
