The strangest line to me is where they say she changed her tune on immigration after hiring a consulting group that introduced her to activists. As though meeting activists isn’t something that could potentially change someone’s mind. It’s maddening.
“Back when she had an A rating from the NRA, Kirsten Gillibrand used to brag that she and her family shot their own turkeys for Thanksgiving,” writer Ciro Scotti, a contributing editor at the Fiscal Times, begins. “But in her relentless positioning for a possible presidential run in 2020, was she too quick on the…
Thanks, but I worked customer service and retail for 10 years in NYC, so I have plenty of experience to compare to. The worst experiences I ever had were in the Met.
As a former MET museum employee myself (many years ago), you are absolutely right. The worst fucking people in the world were the asshole New Yorkers—between getting pennies thrown at me, being accused of lying to tourists, and generally disgusting comments (sometimes direct and sometimes to their friends...like we’re…
I’m with you on the undocumented thing. Identification is such a precarious issue which leaves trans people, undocumented people, and people with various other immigration statuses, at certainly more risk.
This is a real misstep for the Met, and a damn shame if they actually follow through with this. The Met is a storehouse of our cultural and artistic heritage, and it shouldn’t be limited to only those who can pay, like you said. I did a ton of shoestring traveling as a 20-something. I enjoyed the Met (and voluntarily…
That’s every customer service or retail job though. Cashiers at Walmart or any store in Times Square probably have horror stories beyond yours. I worked for a national telefloral place during holidays and as a cashier once. I’ve been berated for everything.
I went to the Met once with the intention of paying nothing for entry and the woman behind the counter treated me like I was the biggest nuisance she’d come across that day.
So, I worked as a visitor services associate for 2.5 years (sold tickets, worked into), and was there during the lawsuit. You would not believe the god awful way that people treated us, the lowest rung employees with no power or control (or benefits bc we were all part-time, so we got pretty much nothing). Visitors…
Also, apparently, they spent $65 million on those fountains outside the Met. Based on the Met’s estimates, those fountains could have paid for tourists’ fees for about a decade.
Well, if we use the argument that the Met is taxpayer-funded to argue that it should be free, then I’m theoretically okay with charging fees to out-of-towners whose taxes don’t go to fund the Met (but yes, $25 is too much for just the main museum, which is all most people will visit).
This reminds me of the last time I was at the Museum of Natural History in NYC and at the ticket counter I handed over money for the suggested student price ($15 I think) and the salesperson asked to see my student ID. I asked why he needed to see an ID when all the ticket prices were suggested amounts anyway, and he…
Art, and culture in general, should not be placed behind a pay wall! This would entice younger, and not, americans to spend more time in museums. I had the chance to go to the MET recently, and although I enjoyed it a lot, the 25$ mandatory fee (+ handling LOL) when purchasing online stung a lot and prevented…
WHY DON’T PEOPLE WITH MONEY EVER GO TO DECENT TATTOO ARTISTS
Dude shouldn’t even be allowed to dress himself..
Thank you for writing this and the When Can I say I’ll be Alone Forever article! People are continually sold the lie that if they just try A,B,C then everything will fall into place and they’ll meet someone. The reality is too scary. It’s hard, love is fucking mean. And really great people sometimes never partner up,…
Yep, diverse crops systems will indeed reduce disease spread. To a point. But you do have to balance that against a greater area required for cultivation, which means less area for natural species assemblages to inhabit. I have nothing against shade growing, I just don’t think it is a complete solution, and that…
tbh I find this sort of internal-culture peeking out to be very charming. Getting weirdly obsessed with a harmless, arbitrary thing is one of the good and fun parts of being in a group. I’m here for it.
