Yeah, the combs are like a splash of pickle juice in a martini. Weird at first blush, but it works somehow.
Even a bracelet-length or 3/4 length sleeve would be a good nod to the time period. And agreed, a more off-the-shoulder neckline would help that pattern from totally overwhelming the rest of the garment.
