You are not alone. I don’t know if it is aging or changes to my brain from shorter media, but yeah reading for me requires a longer dedicated time period.

I’ve made an effort to try and read more books this year. Reading a book is different in mental effort and concentration than social media. When I “read” social media, it is almost always the case that I’m doing it while waiting to engage in something more important or demanding. A book requires that you stay with it…
I’m reading a book on the philosophy of Calculus. I’m an engineering major with a minor in math from an institution whose math department was very hand calculation enthusiastic and some graduate level math courses. I was reading through the history of pi and it was talking about the painstaking difficulty of…
I can go through my social feed and tell you what everyone will think after it is over. They’ll all say you are clearly ignoring the facts of the issue if you disagree with their analysis. It is important, but it is also entirely unimportant.
Please don’t encourage more people not to vote. A small portion of highly-motivated, “educated” voters are showing up for primaries. By the time we get to general elections, we are choosing from a batch of extremist politicians that most of the country is unhappy with. I’d love to see all voters more educated as much…
At our house it is peanut butter and Nutella sandwiches.
I went to google play because Stitcher didn’t have everything I listen to. I guess I’ll give them another go.
Some of my favorites have jumped from google play music to google podcasts. It turns out that google podcasts is terrible for people like me who have a limited data plan and work in a cell service black hole. Anyone have any suggestions for good replacements on android for offline listening?
On top of that, many auto pay bills can be set to draw from savings. Our mortgage and credit card companies both allow for withdrawls from savings. That means we only have to keep utilities, phone, charitable donations, and spending in checking. We could probably do less than that by paying phone with the CC and…
Could be worse, last year they shifted the school calendar for our district and school started prior to the tax holiday...
I loved Math in high school. College nearly killed my joy for it. It wasn’t until grad school that I really found an appreciation for it again. Thanks for trying to make undergrad math enjoyable.
Sincerely, fellow engineer.
My favorite part was where Warren admitted that she and her colleagues in congress haven’t been listening to the American voters for a long time. I might have taken it wrong but it was a bit of refreshing truth from a career politician.
“would be sponsored by a new tax on stock trades.” Great, once again, I’m sitting on a small handful of stocks that are almost to my goal and the D’s want to change the tax law on investments and change the payout calculus so I can’t sell, while the people they say they are taxing only need a little market volatility…
Any advice on how to pick a good pillow? I’ve gone through probably 10 pillows in 3 years. I’ve juggled cheap ones tossing them when they lose loft. I’ve gotten expensive ones that are well rated. I’ve tried all different fills. My current one has a procedure for me adding and removing material to adjust the loft.…
Girls have been fairly consistently losing interest at a particular grade level probably because of social pressure. I’m glad my daughter has a whole bunch of people trying to encourage her to do science, but I’m a little concerned with the gendered approach. My son’s aren’t having those opportunities thrown at them,…
I spend most of my day disconnected. I’ve had a ton of problems with onenote sync errors lately. I’m pretty sure I’m missing pages from my notebooks too.
Mom refused to keep graham crackers on hand while we were growing up. We learned we could make smores with marshmellows and whatever chocolate was in the house when put on a ritz. Definitely not a replacement, but they are good.
“Filter out videos with real people in them (i.e. cartoons only)“ Looks like someone has never seen the YouTube Peppa Pig videos. (shudders)
Now do the other way around. I grew up in a non sports-centered house. I never cared much for watching anyone play. Now my kids are into sports. I like to watch them grow and succeed, but without that emotional connection from playing as a kid it is kind of excruciating to sit through watching a professional game on…
Yep don’t lie to them. Children are terrible at following rules but they are really great at picking up your irrational fears. If you want them out of the water because of your fear of sea life, you don’t have to do anything abnormal.
