The Voice from the Water

I work in an office attached to a factory inside a wooded industrial park. The area is huge, and although we have night shift work, it gets creepy and quiet at night in certain areas. There have been a lot of anecdotes from lots of employees about paranormal sightings. These are a couple of my recent experiences.

It was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving about 10 years ago. My spouse was still at work, and our two young daughters were off with my mom, who had picked them up after school. I walked into the kitchen after our dog greeted me at the door.

When I was in 3rd grade (about a billion years ago), I went to this little Catholic school in a very blue collar neighborhood. It wasn’t the best area, but it wasn’t the worst, either—narrow streets with dense rows of duplexes, tiny strips of lawn, and a bar on every corner (seriously). Our house was only five blocks

Let me just preface this by saying I’m not a writer so please bear with me…

This could’ve ended up much spookier if it weren’t for my college apartment mates.

As an anxious child, I’d wake up several times overnight to use the bathroom. This happened so often and for so long that my parents forbid me from turning on the lights because it would wake them up.

In 1988 I was 12 years old, and in this year shopping malls were extremely popular across my country, being filled with adults but mostly kids and teenagers all day long. Me and my three-years-older-than-me sister used to go to the largest one in our town with a fixed simple plan: we would go to the mall together,

911 From the Other Side

This happened when I was at university. A few of my friends lived in a nearby hall of residence, in a woman-only block. One night two of my friends, A and L, were up late chatting in A’s room when all the lights in the building went out. They figured it was a power cut or something, and since it was already like 1am

When I was 5 or 6, back in the early 80s, I lived in a small, relatively rural mill town. My cousins lived a block down from me and there was a neighborhood corner store at the end of their block called Cricket’s Corner.

This was one of the most terrifying moments in my life to date, and could easily have ended quite differently.

Ok, so this story definitely falls into the “kids say the creepiest things” catagory, but there’s a helluva coda at the end of it, so stay with me. I promise every word of this true. This is what took me from ghost agnostic to believer.

The Little Boy with the Brown Coat

Text from the Deep

My sophomore year of college I moved out of an awkward rooming situation and was set up in a temporary “emergency single” that the university kept open. After the ordeal I had with my former roommates, I was excited to have a room all to myself.

My mom had a pretty aggressive disease, however, she looked like she was making a recovery and for the most part seemed healthier than she did since diagnosed. Within 24 hours she went from alert and feeling good to in a coma and ultimately passing away. It was absrupt and shocking. Still doesn’t feel real.

About 25 years ago I worked for a couple of years in a very old office building located in the center of a large city in Texas. Built in 1907, the original part of the building was a former home for confederate women (widows of confederate soldiers). After all the widows died and the building sat empty for several
