They did sold a shit ton at launch and they are a company of only 25 employees. The cost to produce the game and all of those free update is a lot less than a major company like Square-Enix. Like someone else said, they probably made enough money that they can continue to work on those free updates.

yes but if you were a legacy player (a player that paid for at least 3 months of subscription in 1.0) they gave you a lifetime reduction on the monthly fee. Legacy pay 9.99/month instead of 14.99 and it even drops to 7.99 if you pay for months.
