Law enforcement and court cases take forever-ever, the accused and accusers would like to move on with their education (if possible, transfer if necessary, etc.) rather than put it on hold indefinitely waiting for "official" outcomes.

Some survivors strongly prefer that law enforcement not be involved - legal prosecution is basically a commitment of multiple years of your life, re-telling your story a half dozen times, and probably everything becoming public even if everything goes as it is supposed to. Some people just want to not have to see the…
I considered applying for a Title IX coordinator job last year and this doesn’t surprise me at all. The impression I got from researching the job is that the people who do it were already employed doing other things in academic administration and then someone tossed this on their list of duties. They have training…
From a strictly scientific standpoint, it is an interesting question.
What is ridiculous to me is the fact that either Killer Mike or Elliott used this language in the first place. It is one thing to say “I am voting based on issues, not on gender,” but focusing on her uterus (or vagina, which I have heard both men and women talk about this election cycle) reduces women to our…
everyone involved should go to jail, imo
But to my point—are you arguing that no child of 14 has ever been mature beyond his/her years with regards to sexual discretion?
After TAing more than a dozen classes, I wish I could say I was even a little bit surprised by this. Moderately prepared male students speak up more than the highest-achieving female students, and then other students assume they must know what they’re talking about or they wouldn’t volunteer so much. Exceptions…
Her word should count for quite a bit when discussing her own situation, much less so when discussing policy or societal norms.
Cannot recommend IBR enough. I’ve been on it since 2009 and it has made my life infinitely easier (e.g., I can afford to buy food). Seriously, even if you don’t intend to see it to its conclusion of forgiveness after 25 years (I don’t), it’s worth seeing if you can qualify.
So, I think I’m not the only one who’s sad we don’t have a place to talk about what’s going on with the Scalia replacement situation here on Jez.
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised at it in any town that isn’t one of the big cities or maybe in the valley. There are a lot of insular, backward-ass people here, and I say that as a native Texan who has had the good fortune so far to never have to live in a rural shithole.
Food is turning out to be the biggest chest-thumping issue between the grand-parents and us. If we want to withhold (or allow) a certain type of food from our 9-month old it’s like we’re trashing their entire parenting strategy. We try to frame it as “society keeps learning, we’re sure you were following the…
AAP is a great primary resource for parents, and CDC and NIH are also good to check for current guidance and explanations why. For very consumer-friendly, current advice, look for parenting sites that research their information and update regularly to keep current. My go-to has been BabyCenter, which is well…
Those baby-wearing frontpacks are the best investment ever (unless your child doesn't like them). It's the most effective way to get our fussy kiddo to go to sleep.
I don’t work in academia, but this is most certainly the protocol in industry. Every company I have worked for won’t give any official comment on an ex-employee or disclose any reasons for termination. They will only verify that you did in fact work there. I was told this is a legal issue where they can be sued for…
I just want to add that parents aren’t the only ones who need flexibility. Primary caregivers (read: usually women) of other adults (e.g. sick parent, spouse, sibling, even friends) also require flexibility. This is an issue that can effect anyone, regardless of their procreative status.
Time that is their own, time that is not being quantified by an employer, time where they can be human adults and parents and find the mental space to look around and feel the blazing fullness of being alive.
It’s really not that high. Probably somewhere between 0.01% and 0.15% of babies are born with signs of FASD (which means any problem caused by alcohol, not just FAS). http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/fasd/da…
Dude. I drink until that stick I pee on tells me I’m pregnant. And even then? Wine happens, yo.
