In theory, the 'real' gen II was when they switched to an even-fire crank instead of a poorly balanced 3/4 length V8 crank that threatened to shake the whole car apart. Either way, the damn lump has a 60+ year history.

I'd say swap the 38oo in it with a last-gasp genIII 3800 supercharged from a mid 00's regal, but with the car in such nice shape, it'd be a shame to change it that much.
