Obviously speaking from my own perspective here, but I’d bet Netflix has a massive, captive audience of people who don’t want to/get to go the theater often (parents!), and who are excited to get to see any *new* movie that looks half decent. That said, 45M opening week doesn’t sound like a stretch to me.
until netflix can judge when I fell asleep their ratings are kinda meaningless.

[Spoilery] The “blindness” premise naturally works really well in a nonvisual medium like a book, because you’re forced to imagine what the monsters might look like and you gain access to the characters’ internal monologues. You really do feel blindfolded too, which adds to the tension marvelously.
Everybody knows Sherlock Holmes is a very intelligent character. What this film presupposes is... maybe he isn’t?
Holmes and Watson are camping. Holmes squints gnomically up at the night sky. “Tell me, Watson,” he says. “What can you deduce from those stars?”
It’s the Sherlock Holmes movie with the ... lactating Watson.

Meanwhile, my unproduced screenplay imagines a world where tasting anything immediately gets you killed, and the huddled remnants of humanity survive on English cuisine and Karen’s potato salad.
