Hmm.. will it let you transfer files in recovery? I have never tried with mine but there's always a chance. I really hope I don't end up in this situation, though I store everything to the external SD.

Especially when you have a phone with a user replaceable battery, if you notice it dying sooner you can always swap it out for a fresh one.
