This may be just my experience, but I find that comedy shows are no longer "events" where one needs to sit down and watch, but something that is on while you are doing other things (surfing the web, cleaning, cooking, etc.).
"Class whiplash" is the perfect way to explain it!. That's what I really enjoy about their entire lineup, they are all so different, and yet there is something to relate to in each show.
I think it's closer to Roseanne (struggling lower middle class family), but I didn't really get into Malcolm in the Middle.
