I’m not suggesting that Crank’s variation on D.O.A.’s premise isn’t clever and entertaining: I really enjoyed the first one and even thought the sequel was ok. And most movies build on established tropes. West Side Story is variation on Romeo and Juliet, and the “tweaks” are profound and important.
