I liked The City and the City, but I mainly liked the principal conceit. His characters are forgettable and he doesn’t have a talent for plot. I tried to slog through Perdido Street Station, and while I liked some of the world-building, I felt that CM needs to know that he needs an editor.

It would be weird for a universal translator to ignore tone, because around half of the world’s languages use tone to distinguish meanings of various sorts.
