I’m not a fan of Madonna’s by any stretch of the imagination, but is it as simple as that? It certainly seemed in the 80s and 90s that she was doing new stuff with respect to pop music, and her persona was interesting.

Anyway, one thing is that it isn’t always about first vs. second album, but rather that for a lot of bands, there’s an excellent streak, and then all of a sudden it all goes to hell.
