That’s because when you read you have a more complex experience, thanks to using your imagination. Watching a film before reading a book - for me, at least - narrows everything down way too much.

I’m not a fan of Madonna’s by any stretch of the imagination, but is it as simple as that? It certainly seemed in the 80s and 90s that she was doing new stuff with respect to pop music, and her persona was interesting.
