We don’t disagree about that, but it doesn’t mean United was in the right. They did the bare minimum required by the law, which is already ridiculously generous to their industry. The law doesn’t say they have to stop increasing their offer at $800.

You’re pretty much right on. The cap is $1,350, which you’re allowed to demand in cash rather than a travel voucher which they’ll try to offer first. But the cap really is 4x your one-way fare, which is probably a lot less than $1,350. And they’ll often bump people with lower fares first for this very reason.

A hotel stay is not a gift, it’s a requirement of stranding someone in a different city for a night because they paid for your service and you declined to provide it.
