It’s honestly amazing nobody ever killed him long before now. He’s been a gaping asshole his entire life, and has negatively impacted literally everyone he’s ever been in contact with - some of them just don’t know it, yet. Some, like droopy sad-sack Michael Cohen, are finding it out.

Since the reason this was never published before was the dialect that Hurston insisted it absolutely needed to be written in (which it absolutely does), I’m not much concerned about it lacking in quality.
