By the way, the real key to good steak is butter. 

I use a scorching hot cast iron. season the room temp steak with salt and pepper. Drop the steak in, sear for a few minutes depending on the thickness and preferred level of doneness (usually about 4 for me with a 1.5 inch steak), flip and put the cast iron into a 450 degree oven for another 4 minutes to finish.
