Writers should have enough pride in their art to proof read their own work, regardless of whether its for fun, for subsistence, or for profit.

The fact that this is a union shop explains a lot of the writing.  In my experience, unions do a good job of protecting the bottom third of their members from the consequences of being sloppy.
