Mark my words, that digital plate (with tracking) is going to be used to support new per-mile licensing fees. Hell, if you pair the California HOV sticker with the mandatory digital plate and per-mile fees people will eat that shit up.

The feds collect $25.0 billion in gas (not diesel) taxes each year. Total. 30% of that would be $7.5 billion, leaving $17.5 billion. The recent tax cut lost the U.S. ≈$2,300 billion. We will figure something out, I’m guessing.

Over the last 15 years, I’ve rented literally 100 economy cars (Toyota, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, etc.) and my daughters have owned 5, and over many thousands of miles I don’t recall one single mechanical problem. That’s impressive.
