i took a few trains in morocco in the late 90s and found the restroom facilities similar to what you describe. HOWEVER, the trains ran on time and were “comfortable” in a purely utilitarian sense.

i was on a train from zagreb to budapest and our car was not at the station. to make things worse i also had constant daihria. the train was cramped, and i spent the whole time standing in and next to the bathroom, trying to apologize for smelling like a cesspit, and vommiting. always reserve tickets in advance.
