Have patience with Fringe, it gets better as it goes along. I remember not liking the pilot and giving up on it, partly because I thought it seemed like a bunch of dead-end X-Files-style mythology bullshit. I was wrong, it actually goes somewhere (despite some orphaned bits of plot in S1).

You didn't miss anything. One of the most overrated movies ever made. Bloated, hammy, and totally overcooked, the movie equivalent of a bad Thanksgiving meal that weighs down your stomach like a big rock without being satisfying. And SO pretentious.
