I base my assertion on all the times that I have heard him say he believes marriage is between a man and a woman. I recently watched the 2008 presidential candidate debate with him and the other candidates that was on gay issues and he was pretty clear about that there as well.

I agree, I think he has been pretty honest and consistent that he does not support gay marriage.

I don't believe its that strategic. I think he believes in traditional marriage and will do what he can to protect gays from discrimination in the context of that belief.
