That is an inaccurate summation of the scene.  It's what the movie wants you to think at that point, but the girl is just trying to escape.

Figured?  You Roger Eberted it (though after twist 3 or 4, I don't blame you for not paying much attention anymore).  They explain in the end that the sister died when she was six, and then show Thieriot forced to dress up like her and be called Carrie-Ann, thus worsening/creating some of his psychoses.
