PHEVs are very much what the US needs in the short term. The most environmentally conscious people I know still aren’t willing to get an EV because of the compromises around them. PHEVs solve 90% of the issues without adding any compromises to car ownership. Considering we keep hearing how constrained the battery cell

I hope you fought that and won. Where I am, bicyclist either have to obey traffic laws, or they have to get off their bike and walk it to be considered a pedestrian at cross walks.

It sure does drive a lot of traffic, so they are going to keep these terrible authors that everyone disagrees with.

COTD!

Oh, wait. Yes, that Supra and Z4 thing.

It took Tesla over a decade to only sort-of build its EVs right, and if you think that legacy automakers will be any better at it, I have bad news for you.

I’d wager that if you look at cars of comparable ages, Teslas are catching fire at a higher rate than traditional ICE cars. The ICE cars that you hear about catching fire are usually either 20-30 years old, or some exotic. I admittedly don’t have any data to back that up.

A friend and I were driving 12 hours down to Florida to go to the Orange Bowl. We tried to time it so that we would get there in the morning and have the day to spend in Miami. It was around 1AM and we were on I-95 somewhere in Bumfuck South Carolina when we came up on this massive slide show pile up. There were

You can compare the impact to the model Y to any ICE CUV and see similar results. ICE CUVs don’t lose 66% of their fuel economy by towing a light trailer.

Probably because other’s on the list actually have experience making cars.

I largely agree. What I’m indirectly getting at is that the PHEV is going to be a better all around vehicle. EVs are kinda dumb.

Right, so either way it’s not something limited to EVs.

I’ve used the outlets in my truck bed maybe 3 times in the three years I’ve owned the truck.

That’s exactly how physics works as evidenced by real world usage.

That’s not counter to what I said at all. Instead of 1/3 of the range (like EVs get), you’re getting half. That said, I don’t know why you’re doing any substantive towing with a 26 year old German sports sedan.

I’m not sure when turning the truck on would ever be an obstacle. I’m also not sure anyone that needs sustained chainsaw usage is using an electric saw.

Obviously very dependent on what’s being towed. You’re probably doing some serious towing while I’m usually just pulling cars around. The towing I’ve seen from EVs is usually lighter than the cars I pull, such as in the tweet example above.

The hybrid model from ford has electric power available on board. Even my Tacoma has power outlets in the bed, I’d imagine other models do as well. I’m not saying that they won’t be in high demand, just that electrical power for tools won’t be why.

Not really. I go from 18-19mpg to 14-15mpg when towing. What we’ve seen in EVs is that towing utterly guts their range; it’d be like me getting 4-5mpg when towing. As others have pointed out, refueling is also substantially quicker than recharging an enormous battery pack.

AM General was never a GM brand. AM General (brand/manufacturer) produced the Hummer (model) and sold the Hummer from their own dealership network until GM obtained the the rights to the Hummer brand and started selling the Hummer as the Hummer (brand) H1 (model). AM General continued to manufacture the Hummer H1 for
