What would you do with the Gripen? It’s electronic suite is not near as capable as other 4.5 gen airframes. Let alone gen 5 when finished. It is the same as modern F-16. So why bother? I am no fan of the F-35 either, but that has everything to do with the cost and not with the projected capability.
Within certain limits, increasing weight, therefore increasing wing loading, will not diminish best glide ratio but only increase the speed while flying the optimum glide ratio. More equipment would certainly increase drag. Which at higher speeds would increase with speed square.
