That’s true. Anything from a salt belt state is a wash for rust issues anyway. I’m from MN and I had a relatively clean XJ- replacing one of the leaf springs was one of the worst jobs I’ve ever done thanks to a bolt and the unibody rusting into one.

I’m curious if you had started out with a $1000 or $1500 jeep if could have ended with a lower cost overall, assuming less maintenance would have been needed.

That’s where we’re at now. Two kids, a long commute and some space-sucking hobbies (woodworking & scrapbooking) and we’re looking for house #2. Thankfully we bought in 2011 so we’ve got great equity thanks to the housing market upswing.

Who says they don’t want their nice cars? They took their cars to the limit-and beyond- and ended up with a great story! None of the cars are particularly rare or even especially special. Maserati would love to sell these guys some new cars so they could do it again.

I’ve had both in past also. I can appreciate how bulletproof an XJ is, but I had my ZJ a lot longer and have more fond memories of it.
