Part of it was the sheer number of cars in 2010, when Ford has sold (relatively) few new Escapes. Still, I bet Ford is hoping this is the last of it, since it could really snowball if problems keep popping up.

The midwest (at least the Twin Cities) is full of industrial design options. If it's what you really want to do, go for it, but just be aware it's not the most profitable field.

As another industrial designer, I can answer your question. For a just a hobby, you can teach yourself a lot about industrial design. There are tons of great books, and frankly lots of it is common sense and intuition. As for the art talent; no, you don't need it, but it really helps. However, what many people don't
