Eh, they are endangering themselves way more. Worse case senario in the car, person X slames on brakes to avoid biker Y, get rear ended by person Z, whiplash and a totaled car. As opposed to the (idiot) biker, who gets hit by person x and dies at the scene.
Depending on the local laws, bikes generally have to follow the same rules as cars, and therefor don't have to share a lane like that. The Hyundai driver was already trying to bully his way into different lanes, and figured he going do the same to the cyclist.
